Titans Take 2nd Place
After a tough few games the Titans entered their final regular season encounter against the already crowned conference champs the UWE Bullets in desperate need of a win. After suffering their first loss of the season against the Lions back in week 5 the Titans season took a nose dive. They then travelled to UWE and suffered a painful 32-6 loss, the solitary touchdown coming from wide out Luke Wheadon. They then took the long mid-week trip to Hertfordshire to play their re-scheduled fixture. Once again coming up short with a 7-6 loss and the 6 points coming as a result of a pick 6 by Gethyn Chadwick.
This left the Titans 4-3 in the standing. Birmingham Lions edged out Herts in the Saturday fixture leaving the Titans needing the W in their final game to guarantee a home play-off.
Unlike the start to the away fixture the Titans started strong with the defence forcing a fumble which was collected by Todun Soetan. Immediately the offence that had only put up 6 points in two games came to life. Strong outside running from Canice Gonzague and a nice grab by Dan Marshall marched the Titans towards the end-zone. A nice scramble from stand in QB Elliot Bodman allowed him the space to find open rookie receiver Peter Hart to put the first score of the day and ignite a partnership that would prove fruitful later in the match.
Once again the defence continued in their fine form with Gethyn breaking through the line and forcing the UWE QB to scramble and tackles by Corner-back Harry Calton stopping the outside run dulled the UWE offence. The defence were pushing UWE back when a forced fumble by rookie Piers Jensen was collected by Gethyn Chadwick and ran home for the TD giving the Titans a 12-0 lead.
Back on defence they continued to dominate with huge tackles from Daryl Tan, Ben Cooper and Ike Amuze once again forcing the punt. After the early injury to Canice, up stepped 2nd year RB Luke Patmore with some powerful tackle breaking inside runs keeping the chains moving. Once again Bodman linked with Hart to put another TD on the board. 2 point scored by Dan Marshall.
UWE were able to pull a score back putting the Half-time score at 20-6.
Second half and the Titans continued to turn pile on the pressure. QB Bodman broke out of the pocket to find a free lane to run it home, it looked a certain TD until he fumbled it with a yard to go putting the Titans inches from another score. Once again Bodman found Hart for his 3rd TD of the day.
More inspired defence this time coming from some big D-Line pushing from Tofumi Okude and big Filip Stephanovski to keep the bullets at bay. Continued running by Patmore put the Titans in the Redzone and once again Bodman went to the air to pick up the score this time hitting Dan Marshall on an out-route. 2 points scored by Will Luck. The score at 34-6 into the fourth quarter.
It was time for the rookies to step up, Defensive Lineman James Schofield bringing some pain with some huge tackles on defence and special teams. Finally to top off a perfect sweep of rookies scoring in the game, touchdowns from Sam N'gombe and Will luck put the score at 48-6. 2 point scored by Lewis Marshall.
On top of this emphatic win the Titans defence also grabbed themselves another accolade, they once again topped the premiership south as the best defence with an average points conceded of 14.87. This is the third year in a row that the Titans defence have been the best of the south.
The Titans therefore have cemented their place at 2nd in the Premiership south and have earned themselves a home play-off against the current National Champions the Durham Saints on the 3rd of March at Llandarcy.
